What are hidden emoticons and smileys?

Hidden emoticons, secret emoticons or smileys used to be a source of some anguish and frustration. When emoticons first appeared they were limited and clumsy to use and the hidden emoticons were those characters which generally could not be found in the “official” emoticon menu of the instant messaging program that you were using, even though they were standard and official emoticons or smileyssmileys. Because they were not visible in the menus, they were often called “hidden” or “secret” emoticons.

In order to send them across, you once had to directly type the relevant keyboard shortcut (emoticon codes) into your instant messenger chat window and send your message. Once you had typed the secret code you would have seen the hidden emoticon or smiley appear, and your buddy would also have received the hidden smiley you entered.
