This reports on an emoticon statistics update which highlights the continued amazing growth in the use of emoticons. I have reported previously about the amazing emoticon statistics. What this report shows is the continuing stellar growth of this phenomenon.

It is only 43 days ago that I reported the number of searches for each of the following search terms. Today I have added the current vales for comparison together with the growth rates for each of the keywords.

What a difference 43 days makes! Every statistic is up by at least 49%. that’s 50% growth in 43 days. Wow!

What are you guys out there doing with the smileys? This is a meteoric rise in their use. I knew they were popular but this is going crazy!

This means that there are at around 938 thousand searches every day. By the time you add in all the other similar searches there is almost certainly over 1 million searches every day for smileys and emoticons! Every single day! thats around 365 million searches every year. Just for those lovable little characters. that’s a lot of searches.

Before you question these statistics, I must say that they are by their nature approximate. But what is interesting is the growth rate. My figures are very much on a like for like basis and therefore while the absolute numbers might be approximate, the growth figures should be less so, because I have used the same basic source for the figures.

The figures for the number of pages that Google has identified as satisfying the search for each of the keywords is shown in the table below.

Interestingly three of the four keywords is showing an increase in the number of pages on the internet. I cannot answer why one page statistics have gone down, but all the others are up between 12 and 17 percent. this is phenomenal growth in just 43 days!

I would caution on the absolute numbers for these statistics. Many pages will be counted more than once in the above table, but nonetheless significant underlying growth in double digits over 43 days is quite remarkable.

It seems to create a sort of love or hate response in a lot of people but the statistics clearly show that there is an awful lot of people who love them. Unfortunately, it is not possible to get the statistics for the number of people who hate them – but maybe, someone will.

Now I should say at this point that I have only included the searches for the basic smiley and emoticon words. I have another research project going on to investigate the total number of searches including all the variations of searches on smileys that people make. I can only guess at this stage, but the total total figure could easily be double; i.e. over 400 million. That is a lot of searches for cute little fellows.

So we have established that there are a lot of people looking for smileys or emoticons. What is equally staggering is the number of websites or web pages which are answering the call. The number of pages that Google has identified for each of the same search terms is as follows:

Now, there is undoubtedly a lot of the same pages counted in each of these figures so it is quite difficult to work out the number of unique web pages which answer the call, but using some educated guesswork it is likely to be in the 50 – 60 million mark. (I am prepared to admit that this guess could be wildly wrong, by the way). Now, that is a lot of pages for some cute little fellows that you add to emails. Imagine all the work that has gone into creating these pages. It must be an industry in its own right!
